Nexans DEH Ormen Lange banner w560

Nexans DEH Ormen Lange umbilical w120Project description:

  • The Ormen Lange field is in the Norwegian Sea some 120 km north west of Norway's Møre coast at a depth of 800-1100 m and will be able to meet up to 20 per cent of the UK’s gas requirement for up to 40 years.
  • All equipment is on the sea bed and controlled from onshore; there is no platform or other equipment at the surface.
  • The development of the Ormen Lange field, started in 2006, and is among the largest and most demanding industrial projects ever undertaken. The operator of the field is Shell.
  • Ormen Lange is ready for retrofitting a DEH system, developed and qualified by Nexans in cooperation with Statoil and SINTEF. The connection points are pre-installed on the pipeline. In the event of a future decision by Shell for pipeline heating, cables and equipment for power supply can be connected using an un-manned ROV.

Challenges of the project:

  • 850 metres is the greatest depth ever for DEH.
  • There was a need for a solution that could be retrofitted.
  • The system's installation method and concept had to be developed.
  • Melting of ice plugs.

Nexans DEH Ormen Lange w120 Nexans' solution:
  • Fully-qualified DEH system for retrofitting.
  • ROV-friendly connection between high-voltage cable and pipeline (patented solution).
  • Patented cable design for this and greater depths of water.
  • New concept for installation, operation and removal of the system.
